Rule of 2 and 4 for Quick Odds
Level 3 - Lesson 4
Quick Calculation at the Table!
Rule of 2 and 4 is a fast and easy way to calculate your chances of hitting your hand without a calculator. It's the pros' tool for quick calculations at the table!
The Simple Rule
Rule of 4
After the flop → To get your chance by river:
Number of Outs × 4 = Percentage (approximately)
(Accurate when you have 8-9 outs or less)
Rule of 2
After the turn → To get your chance on river only:
Number of Outs × 2 = Percentage (approximately)
(Very accurate in most cases)
Practical Examples
Example 1: Flush Draw After Flop
Your hand: A♠ K♠ | Flop: 7♠ 9♠ 2♥
Calculation:
• Number of outs: 9
• Use Rule of 4: 9 × 4 = 36%
✓ You have approximately 36% chance to hit flush by river
(Exact: 35% - only 1% difference!)
Example 2: Open-Ended After Flop
Your hand: J♥ T♦ | Flop: Q♠ 9♣ 2♥
Calculation:
• Number of outs: 8 (four K + four 8)
• Use Rule of 4: 8 × 4 = 32%
✓ You have approximately 32% chance to hit straight by river
(Exact: 31.5% - high accuracy!)
Example 3: Flush Draw After Turn
Your hand: A♠ K♠ | Board: 7♠ 9♠ 2♥ 3♦
Calculation:
• Number of outs: 9
• Use Rule of 2: 9 × 2 = 18%
✓ You have approximately 18% chance to hit flush on river
(Exact: 19.6% - very close!)
Example 4: Gutshot After Flop
Your hand: J♥ T♦ | Flop: Q♠ 8♣ 2♥
Calculation:
• Number of outs: 4 (four 9 only)
• Use Rule of 4: 4 × 4 = 16%
✓ You have approximately 16% chance to hit straight by river
(Exact: 16.5% - very accurate!)
Using It With Pot Odds
Now you can make quick decisions at the table!
Complete Example:
Situation:
- Your hand: 9♠ T♠
- Flop: J♠ Q♠ 2♥
- Pot: 200 chips
- Opponent bet: 100 chips
Quick Calculation:
1️⃣ Calculate outs:
• 9 outs for flush + 8 for straight - 1 duplicate (K♠) = 15 outs
2️⃣ Use Rule of 4:
• 15 × 4 = 60% chance!
3️⃣ Calculate Pot Odds:
• 300:100 = 3:1 = 25% required
✓ Your 60% chance is bigger than 25% required - call immediately!
Quick Reference Table
| Outs | Rule of 4 (After Flop) | Rule of 2 (After Turn) | Exact (River) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 | 60% | 30% | 54% |
| 12 | 48% | 24% | 45% |
| 9 | 36% | 18% | 35% |
| 8 | 32% | 16% | 31% |
| 6 | 24% | 12% | 24% |
| 4 | 16% | 8% | 17% |
Warning: Rule Becomes Less Accurate
Rule of 4 becomes less accurate when you have many outs (15+):
With 18 outs:
• Rule of 4: 18 × 4 = 72% ❌
• Exact: 62% ✓
• Difference: 10%!
Simple Solution:
When you have 10+ outs:
(Number of Outs × 4) - (Number of Outs - 8)
Example: 15 outs → (15 × 4) - (15 - 8) = 60 - 7 = 53%
(Exact: 54% - excellent!)
Common Mistakes
❌ Using Rule of 4 after turn: Use Rule of 2 only after turn!
❌ Miscounting outs: Make sure to count outs correctly first
❌ Forgetting dirty outs: Reduce the number of outs if you have doubts
❌ Using it with 20+ outs: Becomes very inaccurate
